At St. Helen School, we are committed to challenging our students and ourselves to strive for excellence in our academic and faith instruction to inspire our students to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally. First Grade at St. Helen is part of a faith community that strives to live the Gospel message. Christ is the reason for our school. We embrace differences and prepare our students to be life-long learners as we focus on a monthly virtue to follow Christ’s teaching in every aspect of our day. In addition to attending Mass and daily Religion classes, we celebrate our community with service projects from each grade exhibiting faith and learning.
In religion, we discuss the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Eucharist. We also cover The Sign of the Cross, Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, Creation and various Bible Stories. First Grade also learns about Our Parish, what a parish is and what it means to the community, Advent, Lent, how God and Jesus show they love us and how we can show his love to others.
In language arts, we work heavily with phonics instruction, building vocabulary and spelling skills as well as emphasizing comprehension through a literature based reading and writing curriculum. Social Studies and Science is integrated into the Language Arts program.
In math, we start with ordering numbers and emphasize adding and subtracting strategies to twenty. Place value, and measurement as well as time and money are part of our core curriculum.
Through these subjects, we learn about our communities and our environment and how we all make an impact on the world around us. Our curriculum also includes art, computers, library, music, introduction to Spanish and physical education.
